Description

Today Leo looks at the upcoming AMD Threadripper launches and details the new rig he built - opting for AMD hardware !

LEOS NOTES:

Leo says 44 AMD Threadripper

Ryzen 9 3950X has arrived and Luke loves the performance of 16-cores on the desktop that is combined with an ungodly level of power efficiency, however it is not due on sale until 25th November.

Luke will be joining Leo for a ’Luke and Leo Say’ soonish

We don’t have long to wait until Intel launches 10th Gen HEDT Cascade Lake X and AMD launches Threadripper 3960X and 3970X.

We know Threadripper is coming on 25th November and VideoCardz tells us Intel 10th gen HEDT will launch at the same time on the same day.

Core i9-10980XE looks like reasonable value for money at £1,000, but clearly it is elderly and a grand is a grand where Ryzen 9-3950X is expected to cost £750.

Threadripper 3000
$1,400 3960X 24-cores
$2,000 3970 32-cores

There were rumours of 3990X coming in January 2020 and then we saw an MSI leak that appears to confirm there will be a 64-core Threadripper.

https://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/matthew-wilson/64-core-ryzen-threadripper-3990x-may-have-accidentally-been-revealed-in-trx40-motherboard-overview

What will that cost $4k? $5k?

The really big news is the TRX40 platform for Threadripper 3000 which also goes on sale on 25th November. While TRX40 looks similar to X399, AMD tells us that Threadripper 1000/2000 CPUs will not work with TRX40 and Threadripper 3000 will not work with X399. The new platform uses Zen 2 architecture to provide PCI Express 4.0 storage and graphics.

With X399 the connection between CPU and chipset was 4x Gen 3 PCIe lanes and this has now doubled with TRX40 to 8x Gen 4 lanes in each direction. TRX40 has a total of 88 lanes of PCIe bandwidth and when you deduct the 16 lanes of interconnect you will see that leaves 72 useable PCIe lanes for storage, expansion cards and graphics.

AMD has stated that 2nd Gen Threadrippers will continue to be on sale so X399 is not yet End Of Life.

Yup, I have built a new PC and am moving from a 12-core 1920X to a 12-core 2920X and am also switching from GTX 1080 graphics to RTX 2080.
