Video Transcript: Recently, at The Hub in Philadelphia, US veterans had an opportunity to fund their entrepreneurial dreams as a part of the Greater Philadelphia Veterans Network’s (GPVN) 2nd Annual Veteran Entrepreneur “Shark Tank” Business Pitch Event. One company pitching its business plans to the city’s local CEOs was Osiris Biomed 3D, a startup hoping to create 3D printed patient-specific implants.

Osiris Biomed 3D has not specified which types of implants the company will pursue, but says that, with their proprietary software, doctors will be able to create 3D printed implants from patients’ medical scans all during a surgical procedure, as long as the FDA approves. Osiris has already applied for a patent around “single anesthetic reconstructive surgery” in which a patient is scanned, a personally-tailored medical device or implant is printed, sterilized and installed in the span of a single procedure.

CEO of Osiris, Dr. Theodore Gerstle, said that as veterans, they believe they are uniquely positioned to bring lifesaving and life improving changes to the current standard of care for military and civilian patients alike.

The company has not yet explicitly outlined how they might be capable of scanning a patient, designing, 3D printing, and installing an implant all in the course of a surgery or if they have developed any prototypes in that direction.
